(Lee’s Summit) – The Summit Christian Academy (SCA) International Program was recently notified that they have been selected to receive the 2013 Tony Cook Memorial Grant.

“Summit Christian Academy has made an impact on American students as well as exchange students by teaching and sharing foreign language, history and culture,” said Executive Director of AIFS/Academic Year in America Melanie French. 

Summit Christian Academy was one of ten schools selected nationwide to receive the $1000 Memorial Grant.

Rotary Scholarship recipient Hannah Finnegan.

(Lee’s Summit) – Summit Christian Academy (SCA) senior Hannah Finnegan was recently awarded a Rotary Scholarship through the Lee’s Summit Rotary Club. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving senior who is in the upper 20% of the graduating class with high academic achievement, commitment to community service, and a record of leadership.

Finnegan plans to attend the University of Nebraska and major in Health Science.

(Lee’s Summit) – Summit Christian Academy (SCA) students who demonstrate honesty, integrity, respect, consistent spiritual attitudes, and quality academic achievement are nominated for the Christian Character Award.  They are carefully selected by their teachers throughout the year and are presented with a certificate and a $50 Savings Bond during one of the weekly chapel services.

The award is given to encourage students to pursue their potential toward attaining the highest level of personal and academic development, and gives them an opportunity to be positive role models for classmates while demonstrating Christian character.  Elementary students are identified quarterly and secondary students each semester.  Only those students who consistently lead in these areas receive this recognition. 

The SCA Christian Character award winners for second semester for grades 7-12 are:  11^th grade student Jackson Redford, 9^th grade student Hailey Trimmer, 8^th grade students Abram Bagunu and Lindsey Berry.

(Lee’s Summit) – Summit Christian Academy (SCA) recently elected two new members to the Board of Education.  Danan Hughes and John Kliewer were elected by the parents of students at SCA and will be seated at the end of the May 23 Board meeting.

Danan Hughes and his wife, Tifanni, have been married for 17 years and have three children, Taurin, Savana, and Talyn, who have attended SCA since 2000.  Hughes attended the University of Iowa on an athletic scholarship and played baseball and football.  He played professional baseball for two years before being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993.  He played with the Kansas City Chiefs for six years (three years as captain) and retired in 1999.  Hughes has been with U.S. Bank Home Mortgage in the Wealth Management Group since April, 2000.

John Kliewer and his wife Megan have three children, Jessalyn, Preston, and Griffin, who have attended SCA since 2005.  Kliewer graduated from Tabor College, a Christian college in Hillsboro, KS, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.  He joined Waddell & Reed Financial Advisors in 1995 and serves as a managing principal and is on Waddell & Reed’s Leadership Council.  Kliewer served on the Board of Education for Grand Island Christian School and Megan has been a teacher in two Christian schools. 

“We are pleased that our school has elected two outstanding individuals, who are not only leaders at SCA, but are active leaders in the community as well,” said SCA Head of School Linda Harrelson.

(Lee’s Summit) – The Summit Christian Academy (SCA) Women’s Soccer Team finished the Season strong last week at O’Hara.  They placed second in Districts after losing to O’Hara at the District Championship.  The team finished 9 and 7 on the season. 

“The team had a great season,” said SCA Soccer Coach Carlos McField.  “They are a great group of student athletes who gave it their all while they were on the field.

SCA Theatre Department Receives Cappie Nominations

(Lee’s Summit) –Several Summit Christian Academy (SCA) theatre students were recently nominated for a Cappie Award.  The 11^th Annual Cappie Awards Gala for Kansas City will be held on June 1 at Grandview High School and celebrates the best in high school theatre.

The following students from SCA were nominated:

For the Play Comedy of Errors:  Sarah Caruthers & Kylee Schuh for Make-up, Nicki Murff & Taylor Shippy for Choreography, Justus Wagner for Comic Actor in a Play, and The Mimes for Ensemble in a Play.
For the Play Acts of God:  Play was nominated for Best Play, Carolyn Herrera for Featured Actress, Hannah Zizza for Supporting Actress in a Play, Nikki Murff for Lead Actress in a Play, and Easton Parks for Lead Actor in a Play.
Also nominated was Gillian Smith for Female Critic.

(Lee’s Summit) – Last year Summit Christian Academy (SCA) hosted fifteen international students from across the world. Host families are needed for the more than 20 international students interested in moving to Lee’s Summit and being part of Summit Christian Academy. 

Hosting an international student is an exciting adventure and has many benefits including the opportunity learn first hand about another culture as well as the opportunity to share American culture and family life.  Some international students come with a monthly stipend for host families. 

Host families open their home and heart to an international student by providing room and board and sharing every day life.  The SCA International Program Director, Kathy Tharp, will provide essential tools and information to help families through the process.

(Lee’s Summit) – Summit Christian Academy (SCA) seniors Easton Parks and Sarah Lambert recently were awarded the second annual “Integrity Scholarship” offered by SCA Business Partner, Integrity Roofing.  Seniors were provided the opportunity to write an essay on what integrity meant to them and how they have acted with integrity in life. 

Lambert described her own struggle with an autoimmune disease, “Often times when your expectations of life are shattered, it’s easy to become bitter and angry. One who has integrity will not be corrupted by circumstances that seem to be unfair or difficult.”

Parkswrote, “A man of integrity keeps his word and stands up for his beliefs in the face of hardship and ridicule.” He continued by explaining how he demonstrates integrity at his workplace, “I strongly believe that consistently working hard even when no one is around to supervise shows integrity.”

(Lee’s Summit) – Summit Christian Academy (SCA) recently recognized Senior Luke Hammer as the Student of the Year.  Hammer has attended SCA for 5 years and will be attending Drake University.  Hammer plans to major in Business Management and International Relations.  Hammer is the son of Rodney and Debbie Hammer of Lee’s Summit.

Hammer was very active as a student at SCA.  He was the President of Student Government, the Vice-president of the International   Thespian Society and Cappie winner, the student director and intern for SCA’s international program and GlobalConnect, a student commissioner for the Lee’s Summit Human Relations Commission, a varsity hockey player, an award-winning artist, and a three-time published author.

“It is an honor to present Luke with this award,” said SCA Secondary Principal Emir Ruiz-Esparza.  “He is a young man of  tremendous character who was a leader not only at SCA, but in the community as well.”
